Adelaide - a visionary and transformative city
This year, AIEC heads to South Australia’s cosmopolitan coastal capital, and the fifth largest city in Australia – Adelaide. We’re excited to bring the international education sector to Australia’s most progressive and future-focused city.
Adelaide/Tarntanya is ranked one of the world’s friendliest and most liveable cities. Innovatively planned as a city surrounded by nature with scope to grow sustainably, Adelaide has established itself as a hub for Australian technology and embraces sustainability and innovation through progressive investments and initiatives throughout the city.
AIEC 2023’s theme – visionary and transformative – reflects Adelaide’s ethos of innovation and transformation. Let’s take a similar approach when considering our sector’s challenges when we meet in October.
Adelaide’s not all silicon chips and technology, though – this picturesque city offers diverse examples of old and new architecture amidst the lush greenery. Plus, there’s a range of exciting things to see and do. Think modern museums and galleries, world-famous food and wine producers, local wildlife and sporting venues, there’s something for everyone. Why not take an extra day or two after AIEC to explore this incredible place?
Read on to learn all the info you need to make the most of your trip to the South Australian capital. If you haven’t registered yet – you can still benefit from the early bird rates until September 4! Registrations have just passed 1,000 delegates, and dinner tickets may sell out soon.
Don’t miss being part of the conversation at AIEC!

Adelaide: a city for progressive thinkers
|
|
The Kaurna, the original people of Adelaide and the Adelaide Plains, call Adelaide and its parkland area Tarntanya – red kangaroo place – and it is considered the heart of Kaurna country. Prior to colonial settlement in 1836, Tarntanya was an open grassy plain with patches of trees and shrubs, the result of hundreds of generations of skilful land management. Today, the Kaurna are the custodians of the Adelaide region, and their cultural and heritage beliefs are important to the living Kaurna people today.
Adelaide is ranked one of the world’s friendliest and most liveable cities. Innovatively planned as a city surrounded by nature with scope to grow sustainably, Adelaide is a progressive and pioneering place that is reflected in a number of Australian firsts: - the first Australian city to be planned, developed, and settled by free settlers without convict labour
- the first Australian city to have an elected council
- the first Australian state to grant women, including Indigenous women, the right to vote for and stand as parliamentary candidates
- the first Australian state to decriminalise homosexuality.
In recent years, Adelaide has emerged as a technology hub with developments in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, smart sensors, and big data. Adelaide is a Smart City, embracing sensors and data technology to improve urban services, connectivity, transportation, and overall efficiency. Adelaide’s founding ideology of sustainable growth continues through investments in green initiatives such as renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.
